Welcome to my Blog!

Welcome to Flirt Photography...
My name is Amelia Thornton and I LOVE photography.
I inherited my passion for photography from my grandfather - it was his Minolta SRT-101 (from 1967) that saw me through post-secondary school studying journalism and his handwritten notes on images that still bring a smile to my face.
I love sunshine and available light. My family members are my friends, and I consider my friends family. I drink too much coffee but I love herbal tea. I like songs that make me want to dance, run, or drive a bit too fast.
I love water, the smell of rain, thunder clapping while lightening streaks across the sky, waterfalls, oceans...
I like to sit on a patio or in a park and watch people - how they interact, how they smile, how they laugh, and even sometimes...how they cry.
I think everyone has moments of emotional beauty every single day.
I want to show you how beautiful your life is through my camera lens.
This is who I am and what I offer to share with you.

Thanks for your patience as I launch this brand new blog. I will continue to add to each of the sections available as time permits.

King (Eddy) & Queen for a day…

Ahhhh love…is there anything better in the whole wide world? I have said it before and I will say it again – I really do have an awesome job. I have been looking forward to this wedding since October 2010 when I first met Caitlin & Greg (they were referred to me by another favourite couple Darrin & Alicia who got married last September).

After about three weeks of what seemed like near constant rain it was a welcome blessing to wake up to the most beautiful day of the year so far. The sun was shining, the clouds were fluffy and white, and it was absolutely a perfect day for a wedding.

My day started off at the historic and stunning King Eddy Hotel in downtown Toronto where I joined Caitlin with some of her friends and family as she finished getting ready for the big day.

And here I asked Caitlin to think of Greg – she burst into a great big smile:

My good friend Kristina Laukkanen of Michael Raimi Studios came along to help out for the day and she had the pleasure of spending the early part of the day with Greg and his side of the wedding party.

Next we were off to the Timothy Eaton Memorial Church (c. 1914). Caitlin was radiant as she pulled up in a Rolls Royce with her father.

After some formal family photos at the church the wedding party and photographers headed down to the Distillery District for some fun photos.

Next it was back to the King Eddy for a black tie ball complete with a big band.

Near the end of the evening I managed to convince a hotel employee to allow us into the Crystal Ballroom for some fun with Caitlin & Greg. The Crystal Ballroom is magnificent. If you ask some employees at The King Eddy they may try denying it even exists (and this baffles me). Although the hotel was built in 1903, the Crystal Ballroom was added in 1921. It was used as the epicentre of elite social gatherings in Toronto until it was abandoned in the late 1950s (and I have yet to get a plausible answer to the question of why). The room now stands largely unused. Surely an investor will someday jump on the opportunity to renovate and re-open this jewel of Toronto (fingers crossed).

To Caitlin, Greg and their families and friends…thank you so much for choosing me to document your special day. It truly was a pleasure to get to know everyone involved. I wish you much happiness in this new chapter of your lives together and I really do hope you will stay in touch. With love…

Celebrating An Anniversary AND The Gorgeous Gown

Sometimes as a photographer I get to meet couples who are just relentlessly in love (that always makes me smile) – actually it happens almost every time and it is a big part of the reason I love what I do.

The featured couple today was just like that. I didn’t actually shoot their wedding but I was asked to come help out on a first-anniversary shoot in Spencer Gorge. This was quite an adventure as my good friend Anita Hadjur and I set out with our gear to hike down and then – yikes! – back up the gorge…and all the while our gorgeous bride was traipsing over rocks, brush, bushes and fallen trees in her wedding gown (what a great sport!).

Ladies and gentlemen…meet Reham and Mike

Isn’t she stunning?

As a general rule digital photography equipment and water don’t play well together. The spray from the waterfall was refreshing but posed quite a challenge to keeping the lens clear. I think the effort was worth it…

and finally after climbing all the way back up we had time for a few shots on a hill in the dark…

Thanks to Anita for asking me to come hang out and have so much fun together.

Reham and Mike…congratulations on your anniversary and may you have continued happiness as the years go by.

My Life: Foaling Season 2011 @ OKS

Spring is in the air and aside from the lovely sunshine and slightly warmer temperature I have another reason to celebrate the season…foals. My family has a lovely farm east of Toronto where we breed, raise and train Standardbred horses. After a tenuous four-week wait we finally welcomed our first of nine foals last night around 9:30 p.m.

I should clarify for those who do not spend time around horses that the four-week wait was the time AFTER the first foal was due to arrive and had mother nature (or rather the mares) cooperated we should have had five foals on the ground by March 31st. As I sit and type this blogpost I am sitting in a chair in a second floor loft periodically gazing over a field checking on the remaining four overdue mares to watch for signs of labour.

I don’t live at the farm but I do come to visit regularly and this past week included no less than three trips out here for a “guaranteed” delivery only to be disappointed. Yesterday I drove out after dinner and arrived around 9:15 p.m. The normal course of action is to turn the lights out in the barn at 10:00 p.m. and commence foal watch (most mares delivery between 10:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. – not very convenient for those of us who enjoy sleeping). Everyone here (friends and family) was pleasantly surprised when Jewel went into labour at 9:25 p.m. and VERY QUICKLY delivered a beautiful little filly we have named OK Gemma.

Here she is five minutes after she was born (she is still attached to her mum via the umbilical cord in this photo):

Flirt Photography - OK Gemma 01

And here our barn manager Rick is drying OK Gemma off with a towel – she is also sitting under a heat lamp.

Flirt Photography - OK Gemma 02

Very quickly after birth a foal will attempt (usually unsuccessfully) to stand and nurse…

Flirt Photography - OK Gemma 03

And here you see the result…whoops! (It took OK Gemma about 90 minutes to stand on her own and during that time the mare was milked and the foal was bottle-fed colostrum.)

Flirt Photography - OK Gemma 04

This morning we took the adorable foal out to be weighed. Despite her very late arrival she weighed a very healthy 114 pounds (I thought she would weigh more because she was so late but it turned out she was tiny and probably just needed some extra time to grow). She is approximately 12 hours old in the rest of these photos.

Flirt Photography - OK Gemma 05

After the move she seemed exhausted and had a little nap while we cleaned out her regular box.

Flirt Photography - OK Gemma 06

She looks thin but don’t worry everyone…she is perfectly healthy and quite strong.

Flirt Photography - OK Gemma 07

I love the tiny hooves…

Flirt Photography - OK Gemma 08

Then it was time to get up for some more food – so alert and full of beans. It is a little bit too cold for OK Gemma to go outside but I will take some photos of her running around outdoors tomorrow morning.

Here she is coming out to be moved back to her regular box.

Sharon & Kalman…on the eve of love

Well things at Flirt and with my life in general sure have been busy lately. For those of you who don’t know me personally, I moved! That’s right…I now count myself among the millions of other crazy folks who own real estate. I’m still getting settled and unpacking (and having furniture delivered, assembled, repaired, replaced, etc.) so I have a legitimate reason for not blogging in so many weeks. Actually, it was the move coupled with the fact my back (an issue for over two years now) popped out again landing me in the ER Feb 12th. Other than (very) slowly unpacking I have been keeping a low profile recovering as quickly as possible…and with good reason…tomorrow morning I will be shooting the wedding of Sharon & Kalman!

I’m so excited for this wedding. Sharon & Kalman were the second couple who came to meet me at the new studio. After our initial consultation we met up for coffee one night and I got to hear all about how this lovely couple met and fell in love (I can’t help it…I’m a total sucker for a good love story!).

A few weeks later we got together again, but this time it was to shoot some engagement photos. With only about six weeks to go before their big day we had to hope for a bit of a break in the snowy weather and we lucked out one Saturday in January taking time to head over to the University of Toronto campus. It was the perfect setting for these two as Sharon is a teacher and has family who works on the campus and Kalman is actually a Jewish History Professor (albeit for a different school).

Without further ado…the fun-loving Sharon & Kalman:

Caitlin & Greg – a perfect pair

Hello readers!

In my bid to start blogging more often I went through some of the engagement photographs on deck and decided to introduce you to Caitlin & Greg. I love this couple. Caitlin’s parents are friends with the parents of another couple I worked with last year so I met her folks while shooting a wedding in September and they referred Caitlin to me for her own wedding. How lovely!

Caitlin, Greg and I first met at my new studio space (stay tuned for more info and a proper launch shortly) and I was absolutely thrilled to have them as my first official clients at the new space. We chatted about their upcoming wedding – which will take place in May 2011 – and discussed locations and options for engagement photos.

In the end we decided to shoot on Queen West. It was rainy and a bit blasé out that day but it turned out to be a fabulous day for photos. Caitlin looked stunning and had her make-up professionally done for the shoot. She was wearing amazing Christian Louboutin shoes. I asked her if she was getting CLs for the wedding and as soon as she said, “Oh no no…I have Jimmy Choo shoes for the wedding!” I knew we would be fast friends!

Here are some of the shots we took together…

Caitlin chose this photo for her save-the-date cards.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everyone!

I do owe you all an apology for the lack of posts lately. The truth is I have been out having fun…visiting family and friends, working hard and shooting lots of engagement photos for the weddings coming up in 2011.

At the moment, I am out of town visiting family and having a great time catching up with the people nearest and dearest to me.

Yesterday I went to a local park with my parents. We fed chickadees and nuthatches:

I actually just realized a few moments ago that today is New Year’s Eve. Traditionally I bouycott the event so the day itself is not necessarily cause for celebration. I had a friend killed by a drunk driver on New Year’s Eve many years ago and as a result I stopped celebrating it. I also feel there are exponentially more impaired drivers on the road today over all other days of the year so I choose not to expose myself to the risk of driving or otherwise being out on the roads. In any event (party or not) this is the last day of 2010 and as such I feel compelled to reflect on 2010 and look forward to 2011.

What a year 2010 has been. I met many new friends that started out as clients and also had a great time fostering and nuturing working relationships with other photographers, film-makers, wedding coordinators, venue managers, florists, caterers, make-up artists, hair stylists, etc. I shot weddings all over Ontario from Toronto all the way out to Niagara On The Lake. I also had a chance to travel again for work (to India and New Brunswick) and frankly I don’t think it gets much better than that! While I love any excuse to get a camera in my hand, somehow the addition of travel makes an assignment that much more fun and exciting. I will be shooting another wedding in New Brunswick next summer (hi Patty! hi Mark!) and I am very much looking forward to another road trip out east (I will see a moose, I will see a moose, I will see a mouse). I also plan to travel to Alaska in 2011 to shoot photos of some humpback whales…details to follow as the plans get confirmed.

Part of the reflection of the past year has been professional and some has been personal. I made some really great new friends over the past year and a couple of them happen to be incredibly talented film-makers. Regular readers will remember Andrew & Emily Sorlie as the producers of my promo film (shot in May 2010). They have since launced a new business called Honey & Dear producing top notch wedding films all over the world (in fact, they will be jetting off to Australia in a few weeks for a wedding!).  If you are getting married and you haven’t booked a film-maker yet then call these guys…really…you won’t be sorry!

Andrew & Emily wrote their own blogpost to ring in the new year and their words really struck a chord with me. They spoke of being better listeners (something nearly all of us could work on). I really loved what they both had to say and I have been actively paying more attention to my own words and those of others over the past couple of weeks. With permission…here are some excerpts from that blog post:

—–

One of my personal goals is to rid ‘one-upping’ from my repertoire.

One-Upping is basically when you tell someone something such as “Man – I was up so late last night (say 1:00am or something) and now I’m tired” and then that other person saying – “dude – I was up until 2:00am and I had to get up at like 6:00.”  This essentially is like saying – what you’re dealing with isn’t nearly as big of a deal as what I’m dealing with – and it really isn’t helpful, constructive or even nice.

We all shrug it off as sarcasm – but what if you were telling someone something you were really sensitive about?

When I tell you something I’m dealing with – the point is to share and be open and honest.  Now, I’m not really talking about bedtimes here…what happens though when you get the ‘one-up’ response is you feel bad and less interested in opening up with that person next time. Why would you want to if they are probably going to tell you whatever they are dealing with is (bigger/better/harder/more expensive/blah blah blah).

So, instead try this…if someone shares something with you take a moment to listen to them – really listen. Ask them how you can help them with what they are going through (especially if your first reaction is to one-up).  If your first reaction used to be one-upping you could probably help people a lot by taking a moment to think before you respond or react.

Does that make sense?

I’ve been thinking about it a lot.  If you catch me doing it – call me on it.  That’s what friends are for.  Hopefully you’ll give it a try too.

—–

So there you have it – what a simple and yet life-changing idea.

I am definitely adding “being a better listener” to my list of New Year’s resolutions!

To each of you now, I wish you a year of health, happiness, prosperity and peace.

Please do feel free to share your own ideas for 2011 below – perhaps we can all hold one another accountable to our resolutions.

All the best,

Amelia

Holly - My thoughts are with you about your friend. I'm constantly frustrated and saddened by the amount of impaired driving on the roads today and hope for change. Soon. Fairytales do come true…

First off I have to acknowledge a serious lack of blogposts lately…sorry my faithful readers. I have been shooting every weekend in the months of September and October and trying to stay on top of processing and album designs for my lovely clients. But alas, I found myself with time this evening to finally share the incredible wedding celebration of Darrin & Alicia. I LOVE this couple!

I first met Alicia about a year ago when we discussed her wedding plans and she shared the story of how Darrin proposed to her (gentlemen – you may want to take notes on this one!). Darrin actually built a book…I mean out of wood and other material…and wrote a story about his love for Alicia. She pulled the book out to show me that day and it honestly gave me goosebumps.

After exchanging emails we got together for engagement photos in July and had a great time shooting in and around King City. You can see those photos by clicking here: engagement

September 11th arrived and I met Alicia at the salon with some of her bridesmaids for some preliminary photos. She already looked stunning!

After the salon we headed over to Alicia’s parents’ home for the girls to finish getting ready. Alicia donned her stunning Maggie Sottero gown and spent some time with her best friends.

My fabulous friend Kristina Laukkanen of Sugartree Photography came to help out for the day. She met Darrin and his groomsmen at Grace on the Hill Church before the ceremony.

Grace on the Hill Church actually took my breath away. What an incredible building! The church was opened January 2, 1876. The walls are made of grey Credit Valley limestone and the pews are all oak.

The speeches at this wedding were bar-none. Alicia has a very special relationship with her Dad - the bond they share reminds me of the one I have with my own Dad which is probably why his speech honestly brought me to tears…and as you can see I wasn’t the only one.

Sensational Summer

As the season of summer comes to a close (officially tomorrow) I am sharing a different kind of summer today…my dear friend Summer Sills. Those of you who have followed my blog regularly may remember Summer (albeit as a blonde) from last year when I took some portraits for her on a special mother-daughter day. That was just a few short weeks after Summer’s wedding last year. She knew right away she wanted to get together for a bridal portrait shoot but finding time and warm enough weather proved to be an exercise in futility…until yesterday! We finally managed to block a few hours off for a fun and flirty photoshoot on the beaches of Toronto.

I met Summer in the afternoon @ a MAC store on Queen West where the talented James Johnson was finishing up her make-up for the shoot. Summer and I drove to a nearby beach to meet up with my friend Paul Dipp who joined us for the shoot.

The three of us had a great time shooting photos followed by dinner at a nearby pub.

Without further ado…I present the sensational Summer Sills:

The third time is the charm…

Hello faithful readers…so sorry for the lack of posts but I have been too busy shooting (it IS after all wedding season!) to regularly sit down and write for you.

Tonight, I would like to introduce Suzanne & Pete. These two lovely folks are tying the knot country-style on a private farm later this month. It may be hard to remember in this heat wave, but there actually was quite a lot of rain last month and it seemed to happen every time Suzanne and I tried to schedule her engagement photo session…hence the title of this blog entry. It was on our third attempt that we finally managed to make this photo session work by getting together Tuesday night in King City. Suzanne drove TWO HOURS and Pete came in from the west end where he is working for a few weeks. We did our best to ignore the 40° + weather stopping at one point for a cold drink to cool off. We had fun traipsing around King City that evening and wrapped just as the sun was setting so Suzanne could start her long trek home.

Here are some of the shots from our evening in the sun…

Beautifully Blended…

Friday July 30, 2010 was a great day! I had been looking forward to this wedding for months. I first met the bride Tamsen in the Fall of 2009 when we discussed her wedding and my photography services. We clicked right away (no pun intended) and I immediately felt she was a sincere, sweet and sensitive person…I was right!

Tamsen and Michael invited their friends and families to the MacLean House of the Estates of Sunnybrook for an intimate and romantic celebration. Tamsen and Michael both have children from previous relationships and it was with their full support these two blended their families in love.

I met Tamsen early in the afternoon for some shots as she prepared for the big moment…I LOVED her gown – it suit her perfectly.

It was too early to get changed so we headed outside for some pre-wedding bridal portraits in jeans…Tamsen looked gorgeous (her make-up was done by Warda Amrani…and regular readers may remember her as the MUA involved in my promo film).

The team from To Suit Your Fancy showed up to decorate and WOW – they knocked it out of the park. I have decided it is impossible to have too many candles or too much crystal at a wedding. I loved everything they did! (I had an opportunity to work with them before during the wedding of Kari & Sean Davis last summer – they did a great job then too!)

As Tamsen and her Matron of Honour continued with hair and make-up I went to shoot some detail shots…

Tamsen surprised Michael by having his ring engraved with the word ‘forever’ and the date of their wedding ‘7 30 2010′

This was one of the candle holders from the decor team..I loved how the crystals were the same shape as Tamsen’s engagement ring…

Rosanna Riverso serenaded the bride as she walked down the aisle and entertained guests with her three-piece band during the cocktail hour. She did a magnificent job!

After the wedding I camped out at The Fairmont Royal York with a BIG cup of coffee to get to work on the photos. I met Tamsen, Michael and their friends for brunch at the hotel in the morning where I put on a slideshow of photos for everyone. It was great fun! Last month while in New Brunswick for Luise & Maciej’s wedding I signed up for Fairmont’s loyalty program -  I highly recommend it (fast check-in, free HSI, and fantastic customer service).

To Tamsen & Michael…what a remarkable day! You two are an inspiration to everyone around you. Have a great time in Mexico and I will see you when you get home.

Brianna Phelan - Gorgeous bride! I love her dress. Great captures.August 6, 2010 - 21:20
